Born in the 1100s in the small hamlet of Uduthadi, Karnataka, Mahadevi was initiated into the worship of the Sivalinga at the age of ten and considered herself betrothed to Lord Siva. She spent her adolescence in His worship and composed vachanas that spilled over with fervent longings for her Beloved, whom she called, “Chenna Mallikarjuna” or “Lord, White as Jasmine,” the name of Siva in her home town temple.

Vachanas hold a unique place in the long history of Kannada literature. Simple in diction, these are the rich, spontaneous outpourings of the medieval socio-religious Virasaiva reformers of Karnataka. They opened the doors for the common man to participate in the personal experience and worship of Lord Siva through the vernacular language of the day, at a time when Sanskrit was reserved only for the upper castes..

Vachanas combine the lucidity of prose with the rhythm of poetry, marked by certain internal rhymes and syntactic parallelisms. More than 20,000 vachanas have been composed by over 300 prominent Virasaivas. Some 300 of these are credited to Akka Mahadevi, and hers are considered among the most poetic. Her brief but deeply intense verses sparkle with the magic and music of words, conveying the core spiritual philosopy in a poignant tone of one intoxicated with divine love.

Through Mahadevi’s vachanas we can trace the contours of her life on her journey towards moksha, ultimate liberation. We gather that she was a stunning young beauty. King Kaushika, the ruler of the land, fell passionately in love with her the moment he saw her. But she spurned his request for marrage, “But for my Chennamallikarjuna, all men are mere dolls!” she chided the king.

A persistent Kaushika threatened her family with grave consequences until she relented and agreed to marry him on the condition that he would not force himself on her without her consent. When he later failed to keep his promise, Mahadevi walked out on him. As she departed the palace, a wrathful Kaushika demanded the return of all the jewels and extravagant clothes he had presented his wife. Defiant, Mahadevi stripped herself bare and stepped out onto the streets as a digambara— a saint without any clothing.

She walked on foot to Anubhava Mantapa or “Abode of Experience,” a center for philosophical/spiritual discussions in Kalyani presided over by Allama Prabhu where Virasaivas like Basavanna and Chennabasavanna congregated. When Mahadevi, wandering with out clothes, arrived at Anubhava Mantapa, she was greeted with much skepticism. Allama Prabhu, uncertain of her spiritual competence, challenged, “Why come you hither, O woman in the budding blossom of youth? If you can tell your husband’s identity, come, sit. Else, pray, be gone!” Mahadevi answered.

Allama Prabhu interrogated her for a long time, and at the end of it, all the Virasaivas recognized Mahadevi’s worth. Allama Prabhu acknowledged: “Your body is female in appearance, but your mind is merged with God!” Thus, Mahadevi came to be accepted in their inner circles, and out of respect and affection, she came to be called Akka or elder sister.

Akka Mahadevi continued her tapas in Kalyani under the guidance of Allama Prabhu, and the vachanas composed at this stage reflect her progress.

After a few years of sadhana, Akka Mahadevi went to the famous Siva temple at Sri Sailam in Andhra Pradesh. It is said that she spent the last months of her life in various caves, completing her process of enlightenment, and attained Mahasamadhi, divine union with her Lord. Unverifiable historical records indicate that she died in her mid-twenties. Legend tells us that she was consumed in a flash of light, leaving only her poems behind as a chronicle of a spiritual journey that still evokes awe and respect in the hearts of all.

The poems of Karnataka’s Virasaiva saints embody the deepest devotion to Siva and point us to the highest reaches of spiritual attainment.

The Rudresvara temple in Palampet, today a hamlet in Warangal district, is one of the achievements of the Deccan builder. It stands near a great lake of 175 sq. km.. An earthern dam, 610 m long, over 10 m wide and 35 m high, connects a semi circular chain of hills to form the lake.

Temple History

The Rudresvara temple was built by the Kakatiyas in the thirteenth century while they were ruling from Warangal. Warangal, the metropolis dynasty, abounds in magnificent tanks, and the titanic dukes and sluice-gate of Pakhal, Lakhnavaram and Ramappa lakes are object lessons even to the modern enginner. A long description set up in the courtyard of the temple states that Recarla Rudra, a general of the Kakatiyas, built a magnificent city and made a lake nearby as if to reflect its beauty. In this city he erected a fine temple and installed an image of Rudresvara, and endowed it lavishly. This was in 1213.

Temple Architecture

There are seven minor shrines around the main one. The latter, which stands on a high platform, is of cruciform plan. Around it, on the platform, there is space of 3 m for the pilgrim to walk around. Above it, depending from the pillars in the porches, are celebrated figure brackets depicting women in various postures. On the walls of the shrine are pilasters crowned with Dravida and Nagara sikharas alternatively, with, nearby, a miniature of the vimana of this temple itself. The ceiling is a work of art. Divided by columns into compartments, each is superbly carved with floral and geometrical patterns. The decoration of the four columns in the centre is so splendid that no chased work in gold or silver could possibly be finer. Thus, the exquisite sculpture sets off the lofty and grand architecture of the temple. There is a ruined Nandi mandapa in front of the temple. Kakatiya nandis, here in Warangal and elsewhere, are superb creations.

Apart from the seven minor shrines here, there are other temples in the village, situated within a kilometer. Two of them stand at either end of the gigantic bound of the Ramappa lake. All built by the Kakatiyas, every one of them is superbly carved.

Other Information

Apart from the Ramappa, the Kakatiyas’ greatest achievement is the big temple in their capital of Hanamakonda. It is called the thousand pillared temple, though its pillars do not number that many. By road leading from Hanamakonda to Palampet, there are two other Kakatiya temples, in Katakchpur and Jakaram. Beyond Palampet, in Ghanapur, there is a temple resembling the Palampet one. It is surrounded by nineteen smaller shrines and two mandapad. All are in ruins.

Sri Shirdi Sai Baba has become a part of the mainstream of Indian spiritual and temporal life within a short period of attaining mahasamadhi. We can now see Sai temples not only in the big cities but also in small towns and villages of India, and more and more temples are being built. In this video we will learn about the Sai temple built at Bhivpuri 1916, when Sri Shirdi Sai Baba was still in his physical body.

Bhivpuri Road is a small railway station which comes before Karjat on the train route from Mumbai to Pune. If one gets out at this station and looks right towards the fields, a temple spire is clearly visible. This is the Sai temple at Bhivpuri. It is a short walk across the fields to the temple.

The story behind the temple's construction reveals the astonishing manner in which Baba pulls his devotees to him. It is unbelievable but nevertheless true that the founder of the temple, the late Sri Keshav Ramachandra Pradhan, was initially an atheist. Sri Pradhan was working for a Parsee gentleman of Mumbai as a pedhi (a collector of debts owed to his employer). He lived in Bhivpuri and would commute to Mumbai to work. In the course of his job he would frequently go to Manmad, Nasik and Kopergaon. Pradhan had a close friend who was a devotee of Sai Baba. He would often go to Shirdi and return after having darshan of (seeing) Sri Sai Baba. Once, Pradhan visited his friend when he was about to leave for Shirdi. He asked Pradhan to accompany him and to have Baba’s darshan. Pradhan, who had no belief in God or Godmen, initially refused to go with him. Finally, however, he gave in to his friend’s persuasion and agreed to go, but not to set foot inside the mosque where Baba lived. His friend accepted the compromise and they set out for Shirdi together.

The friends reached Shirdi and stayed in the wada. As it was time for the noon arati, Pradhan’s friend went to the mosque but Pradhan stayed in the wada. The bell rang from the mosque for the arati and Pradhan could hear it from his room. The deep gongs of the bell stirred him as never before. He was enchanted by the sound and unknowingly started walking to the mosque from where this heavenly sound was issuing forth.

He reached the mosque and sat in a corner. Looking at Baba, he was immersed in a state of bliss. After the arati was over the other devotees took udhi from Baba and left the mosque. Pradhan was still in a state of bliss and was unaware of everything but Baba. Sri Shirdi Sai then called Pradhan to draw near and asked him for dakshina. Pradhan had Rs 2500 in his pocket. This was the amount he had collected for his employer from the various debtors. He took out the entire cash from his pocket and, placing it all in Baba’s hands, returned to his room still in the same state of bliss. A little later, Pradhan came to realise that he had given the entire amount to Baba and was surprised that he could do such a thing with his employer’s money. His friend told him not to worry as Baba would take care to see that Pradhan would not get into any trouble because of this.

Pradhan started back via Kopergaon from Shirdi in a horse-cart. It was only after he reached Kopergaon that he realised that he had no money, even for the hire of the cart. He requested the cart man to take his ring, sell it and return the remaining cash after taking his fare. While this was going on a well-dressed gentleman, unknown to Pradhan, arrived. After inquiring about the matter he not only paid the cart man but also bought a ticket to Mumbai for Pradhan and left as mysteriously as he came.

Pradhan reached Bhivpuri. He did not know how he could face his employer and tell him that he had used all the money which he had collected. To gain time, he sent word to his employer that he was sick and would come to work once he had recovered. The employer sent word back granting leave till Pradhan was well enough to return to work. He also wanted to know why Pradhan had sent double the money he had collected and what he was to do with the excess? Pradhan saw Baba’s hand in this and was thrilled to the core of his being by the kindness shown to him by Baba. He was electrified that Baba had showered his grace on him to such an extent in the very first darshan...

The Ancient Katasraj Shiva Temple in Pakistan

Katasraj Mandir is a Hindu temple complex situated in Katas village in the Chakwal district of Punjab in Pakistan. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, and is one of the most important Hindu pilgrimage sites in Pakistan still in use to this day by members of the Hindu community.

The relationship of Hindus with the local Muslim population was very good. Local Muslims even accompanied them to the next town Choa Saiden Shah from where the Katas Hindu population proceeded further to India.

The Katasraj temple complex is believed to date back to the Mahabharata era. Many legends are associated with the temple. The five Pandava brothers, heroes of the Sanskrit epic Mahabharata, are said to have stayed here for four of the thirteen years they spent in exile. The lake in the complex is believed to be filled with Shiva’s tears and the waters are thus said to have mystical powers.

The complex is also believed to be the site where one of the Pandava brothers, Yudhishthira, defeated the Yaksha with his wisdom, bringing his brothers back to life.

Another legend involves the death of Shiva’s wife Sati. The story goes that when she died he cried so much and for so long that his tears created two holy ponds – one at Pushkara in Ajmer, in modern India, and the other at Ketaksha in modern day Pakistan, which literally means “raining eyes” in Sanskrit. It is from this name that the word Ketas is derived. Another version of the legend mentions the two pools at Katasraj and Nainital. Yet another version of the Shiva legend involves the death of Shiva’s horse Katas instead of that of Sati his consort. Some legends also state that the very first Shiva Linga was in Kattas.

The Katas site houses the Satgraha, a group of seven ancient temples, remains of a Buddhist stupa, a few medieval temples, havelis and some recently constructed temples, scattered around a pond considered holy by Hindus.

For decades the temple complex was in a bad state due to the ravages of time and the neglect of the authorities.

In 2006-07, Pakistan decided to place deities of Hindu gods in the seven mandirs and restore them to their original state to attract visitors. The budget allocated for the project was Rs. 51.06 million.

The temple was visited by India’s former deputy prime minister Lal Krishna Advani in 2005. The government decided to import deities of Hindu gods from various monuments in India to Pakistan for the restoration.

1000 Years Old Hindu Temple Found Under Indonesian University || ఇండోనేషియాలో బయటపడ్డ పురాతన ఆలయం || Maheedhar's Planet Leaf

1000 years old Ancient Hindu Temple Uncovered in Yogyakarta, Indonesia under Islamic University...

Archaeologists in Indonesia have uncovered a 1,000-year-old temple that could shed light on the country's Hindu past.
The intricately carved statues and reliefs are some of the best preserved in Indonesia, but the dig is being conducted under tight security to protect the site from well-organised relic thieves. The temple was found on the grounds of Yogyakarta's Islamic University as workers probed the ground to lay foundations for a new library, and they realised the earth beneath their feet was not stable.
Digging soon revealed an extraordinary find: three meters underground were still-standing temple walls. Heavy rains then exposed the top of a statue of the god Ganesha in pristine condition. A few weeks into the excavation, archaeologists are declaring the temple and its rare and beautiful statues an important discovery that could provide insights into Indonesia's pre-Islamic culture.
"This temple is important for understanding the culture of our ancestors."

"This temple is a quite significant and very valuable because we have never found a temple as whole and intact as this one," said archaeologist Dr Budhy Sancoyo, who is one of the researchers painstakingly cleaning up the temple.
"For example, looking at where the statues are placed in this temple, they are in their original positions, unlike the other temples.
A volcanic eruption is thought most likely to have covered the temple around the 10th century, about 100 years after it was built. The eruption preserved its statues and reliefs in better condition than almost everything else discovered in Indonesia from that period, including the Borobodur and Prambanan temple complexes.
